What is a Genetics APP?

A clinical genetics advanced practice provider (APP) is a licensed medical professional (nurse practitioner or physician assistant/associate) who works autonomously within the medical genetics team, typically within a genetics division/department, to increase access to direct care for patients needing genetic services.

APP Scope of practice

A genetics APP’s scope of practice includes evaluating a patient for a genetic disorder; assessing a patient with a genetic disorder; completing a physical/dysmorphology exam; ordering and interpreting genetic testing; diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with a genetic disorder, and prescribing medications and treatment plans.

Genetics APPs across the country

CGAPP estimates there to be 133 genetics APPs in the country. This number continues to grow.

CGAPP Annual Conference

Since 2019, CGAPP hosts an annual conference that provides education and networking support to APPs working in clinical genetics. The CGAPP conference will present high level clinical and research topics that are relevant to APPs.  This includes the treatment of genetic disorders, developments in genetic testing and screening, etiology of genetic disorders, and much more.  Breakout sessions will be used to discuss clinical practice in metabolic and general clinics.  This is the only conference designed for the clinical genetics APP.
