What is a Genetics APP?

A CLINICAL GENETICS ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDER (APP)

is a licensed medical professional (nurse practitioner or physician assistant/associate) who works autonomously within the medical genetics team, typically within a genetics division/department, to increase access to direct care for patients needing genetic services.

APP SCOPE OF PRACTICE

A genetics APP’s scope of practice includes evaluating a patient for a genetic disorder; assessing a patient with a genetic disorder; completing a physical/dysmorphology exam; ordering and interpreting genetic testing; diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with a genetic disorder, and prescribing medications and treatment plans.

Genetics APPs across the country

Geneticists are in great demand across the country. According to the National Resident Matching Program, in 2023 only 29% (10 of 35) of Medical Genetics Fellowship programs were filled. In addition, of the 51 Genetics fellowship positions available, only 21 were filled (41%).
